The dome of the 12th century Romanesque Cathedral was reconstructed following the major 1755 earthquake. The cathedral is a Latin cross building with three aisles, a transept, and a main chapel. The building was constructed on the site of the main mosque in Lisbon.

Construction began in 1535 and the building became a cathedral with the creation of the Bishopric of Quito in 1545. After the eruption of Mount Pichincha, a local volcano which struck Quito in 1660, the damaged Cathedral was rebuilt by order of Bishop Alfonso de la Pena y Montenegro.
